This box used turned from a piece of Norfolk Island Pine. It was kind of a reject piece of wood due to the fact that it didn't have the branch knots the Norfolk Island Pine is noted for and the pith was off center. I loved the fact that the pith was off center and decided to create something from this "reject" piece of wood. The color and grain just screamed at me. I have been wanting to try and combine wood and glass mosaic in the same piece. I turned the piece to it final shape, sanded and finished it with multiple coats of lacquer. I then sorted my glass by color and cut into 1/4" strips. From these strips I carefully selected strips by tone and color and cut to length. They were then applied to the box. I mixed up grout and custom tinted it to compliment the glass colors. I turned a small knob for the lid from ebony and applied it off center on the pith. I think the off center effect really grabs your eye as the grain and colors on the top radiate from the knob.
