This box was turned from local Cherry Laurel. It was turned to the rough size and shape then it was placed in the vacuum kiln to remove excess moisture and help stabilize the wood. It was returned to the lathe for turning to it final shape and with sanding inside and out. I decided what I wanted as a design for the body and sketched on the body surface. I then used pyrography and a custom made brand to achieve the basket look. I then turned a lid that would complement the box body. Several different texturing tools were used on the body as well as the lid. The body and lid were then dyed USMC black and a lacquer finish was applied to exterior. I applied a flocking material to the inside of the box body. Flocking is kind of like velour. The underside of the lid was sanded, a lacquer finish applied and it was hand buffed. I like the surprise of the beautiful cherry on the underside of the lid when opening the all black box.
