The design and turning of this piece was a long time coming. I saw a Tiffany bronze and glass inkwell years ago and at the time I thought that look could be done with wood and glass. I finally sketched up the design that I hoped would duplicate the look of that inkwell. The piece was rough turned from cherry laurel and it was placed in the vacuum kiln to remove any excess moisture and stabilize the wood. It was then returned to the lathe and was turned to match the sketch I had completed. It was then sanded and I applied multiple coats of lacquer. I chose a sheet of glass that I felt had the color and tonal range that I was looking for. The glass was cut into 1/4" strips then the strips were selected according to color and cut into shorter pieces and applied to the vessel. I then custom tinted a grout and it was applied to the joints between the glass pieces. The interior of the vessel was finished with flocking which is similar to velour. I have this piece displayed in my studio and it gets a look and a smile from me every time I pass it. I really love pushing the envelope to see what happens.
