This urn was made of wood from the camphor tree. This tree is native to China and was imported into the U.S. as an ornamental. Camphor coloring can range from tans and rainbow colors to a deep red which is almost like a rosewood. I salvaged this wood from the yard of an older home that was slated for demolition. The urn was turned green to its rough shape and hollowed. I then placed it into the vacuum kiln to remove the excess moisture and stabilize the wood. It was then placed back on the lathe to be turned to its final shape. The urn was sanded and 10+ coats of lacquer were applied to the exterior. I then turned the finial from Cherry laurel. The trim collar on the urn and the finial have hand turned wooden threads to seal and secure the contents. When turning it green the odor from the the wood almost takes your breath away, but dissipates after drying It is still one of my favorite woods to turn.
