This urn was turned from Norfolk Island Pine. Norfolk Island Pine is a tree that grows in South Florida and is noted for the concentric ring of branches that turners use as a detail feature. In this urn you can see the branches in the top. This piece was rough hollowed and placed in the vacuum kiln to remove excess moisture and help stabilize the wood. It is then returned to the lathe for turning to its final shape. It is then sanded and an oil finish was applied to enhance the colors and grain in the wood. Norfolk Island Pine is a great wood to turn. The foot and lid were turned from Black Walnut. The finial and trim ring are hand threaded wood. This local Black Walnut tree was 36" in diameter and had to be taken down due to lighting damage. This urn has beautiful colors.
