This urn has been one of the most enjoyable pieces that I have done. I first turned and hollowed a large piece of local cherry laurel to the rough shape. it was then dried in my vacuum kiln to remove the excess moisture for a week and returned to the lathe to hollow further while thinning the walls then turning to the final shape. For the texture on the body I used a technique called pyrography which is essentially woodburning. I have made a custom "brand" that is used in the wood burner to achieve the basket like texture. I then used a hand held power carver and various bits to achieve the other textures on the piece. I then dyed it with USMC black and after the dye has dried it is sealed with several coats of lacquer. The finial is made from black dyed cherry and a slice of Live Oak Burl and slips into the trim collar and is secured with adhesive to secure the contents. Its great to take a piece of wood and many many hours of work to end up with something that is so different from what you began with.
