This piece was hollowed from a large timber of Big Leaf Maple Burl. This wood comes from the Pacific Northwest and as most burled wood are it is very expensive wood. The lid was turned from Swamp chestnut oak which is a white oak and was fumed with ammonia vapors to color the tannins that are in the wood. Fuming with ammonia can give any wood that has tannins a unique color. The lid and body of the urn have been fitted with metal threads that are gold plated. This piece has a 10+ coats of hand buffed lacquer finish. Beautiful figure in the burl.
